Due to their constant size, energy content, and moisture content, wood pellets can be used in automated furnaces and boilers, opening up a whole new world of possibilities. Wood pellet stoves and boilers spontaneously ignite on demand and often use a small electric igniter that ignites for a short time. Precise regulation of the oxygen supply makes pellet burners and boilers highly efficient, minimizing pollutant emissions.

Wood pellet stoves are typically 80-90% efficient. Pellet burners are so efficient that they produce very little ash. You can easily spot the difference when less than 2% of the burned pellet volume turns to ash and the sweeper sweeps the chimney.

How are wood pellets made?

To start producing wood pellets, you need to decide on a pellet mill or a pellet mill. You need a clear picture of your target capacity, usage, and budget. This will help you decide which pellets are right for you.

If the planned production capacity exceeds 500 kg per hour, a pellet plant should be built. If the intended capacity is for domestic use only, a pellet mill is the best option. The production process of pellet presses and pellet production plants usually differs in terms of machine construction, complex machinery used, and material handling. 1. Collect raw materials

To start the process, you must first collect all raw materials such as sawdust, wood chips, and waste wood. For small bundles of wood pellets, you will need 4-5 buckets or 8-10 sawdust. Start adding all the ingredients to the pellet mill machine.

Make sure all raw materials are processed the same way to get wood pellets with the same moisture content, burning time, firepower, and ash content. Also, make sure the size does not exceed 1 inch or 2.5 cm before putting the raw material into the pellet mill. You can use a press mill to reduce the size and make it smaller.

2. Raw material drying

Water and moisture must be completely dried before the raw material is put into the pellet mill. You can let it dry naturally in the sun for 24 hours, or you can use a tumble dryer, also called a quick dryer, which works at high temperatures. There is also a tumbler that continuously applies hot air to the ingredients. Another option is a flatbed dryer that operates at low temperatures. In most cases, sawdust does not need to be dried.

If the sawdust has been stored in a humid climate or is a little damp to the touch, it can be dried in a dry room for 24 hours.

When making wood pellets, wood flour may contain metals and stones. Therefore, these impurities must be filtered to ensure pellet purity. Rock traps are installed and large rocks and other debris are manually removed to extract sources of contaminants. Others, such as ferrous metals, are removed from the belt conveyor by magnets.

4. pelletizing

In this process, a pellet press machine is used to produce pellets from raw materials. The sawdust is fed into high-pressure nozzles that structure the material into recognizable wood pellet structures. The sawdust binds together in this process and determines the durability, density, and size of the pellet.

The pellet press presses hot, soft wood pellets through the die-holes of the pellet press with very high pressure. Consistency is important as this is a critical step as some units require a specific size of wood pellet.

5. Cooling

This step removes the textured pellets from the cooling tower, making them difficult to protect and consolidate. When the pellets leave the press they are very hot and brittle.

Therefore, until the product cools and dries, handle it as gently as possible. After cooling, the resulting moisture content is reduced to 6% and the pellets are conveyed to storage.

6. Storage

At this step, the pellet-making process is complete and it’s time to store the pellets. After sufficient residence time in the cooling tower, the wood pellets are transported to a storage facility for bagging. Store in a plastic or paper bag to prevent moisture and air from entering.
